Who We Are

OVER 90 YEARS OF SERVICE TO PODIATRIC MEDICINE AND TO THE PUBLIC 

The Illinois Association of Podiatric Physicians and Surgeons (ILAPPS) traces its roots back to 1915 when it was originally registered with the State of Illinois as the Illinois Association of Chiropodists. In a pivotal moment in 1987, the organization officially transitioned to the name the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association, and it has recently undergone another significant transformation with the adoption of the name ILAPPS.

Dedicated to supporting Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), also known as podiatric physicians or podiatrists, ILAPPS has become a leading source for foot and ankle health care information for the public. Actively engaged in Illinois legislature matters concerning foot and ankle care issues and access to such care by podiatric physicians, ILAPPS continues to advocate for all citizens of Illinois and its member doctors.

Embodying Abraham Lincoln's sentiment that "If my feet hurt, I can't think!", the Illinois Association of Podiatric Physicians and Surgeons remains committed to ensuring the well-being of our community.

ILAPPS is a proud component of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), established in 1912. As the premier professional organization representing the nation's Doctors of Podiatric Medicine, APMA encompasses a vast majority of the estimated 15,000 podiatrists in the country. Under the APMA's umbrella are fifty-three component societies in individual states and other jurisdictions, along with twenty-two affiliated and related societies. APMA’s national headquarters is located in Bethesda, Maryland. The Illinois Association of Podiatric Physicians and Surgeons, now ILAPPS, remains actively engaged in promoting podiatric medicine within this esteemed national network.

The Illinois Podiatric Medical Association is committed to:

  • Promoting quality podiatric medical practice and ethics;
  • Enhancing public awareness about foot and ankle health;
  • Ensuring the future development of the profession of podiatric medicine; and,
  • Ensuring the continued growth of the Association and promoting the welfare of its members
